The USC Annenberg Institute of Sports, Media & Society (AISMS) is proud to announce a two-day conference exploring the implications of sexual orientation and gender identity in sports. The USC Annenberg Institute of Sports, Media & Society (AISMS) is proud to announce a two-day conference exploring the implications of sexual orientation and gender identity in sports.

Changes: The LGBTQ Experience in Sports 2016 will be held at the University of Southern California on November 9-10, 2016. This conference will bring together scholars, executives, and representatives from sports organizations to examine the evolving relationship between the LGBTQ community and sports. It is free and open to the public.

This conference is sponsored by adidas AG, which has demonstrated a strong commitment to discussions of diversity and inclusivity in sports.

This conference is co-directed by Dr. Evan Brody and Adam Amel Rogers. Dr. Brody’s work investigates both the shifting discursive threads that weave together critical media studies, queer theory, and sports culture, as well as the significant role popular and visual cultures play in the establishment of norms. Rogers, a Project Administrator from the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center, has written extensively about the LGBTQ sports intersection both at the Lear Center and previously at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

Three-years-ago, AISMS hosted the USC Sports and the LGBT Experience conference, which featured the Major League Baseball’s first openly gay former player Billy Bean, the NFL’s first openly gay former player Dave Kopay, John Branch from The New York Times, Kate Fagan from ESPN and a variety of scholars, athletes and practitioners in the LGBTQ sports space.

Conference partners include the USC LGBT Resource Center and the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center.
